Module 2

Introduction Part 1: Hook and Subject Sentence

The first sentence of your introduction is the hook. The purpose of the hook is to capture your reader’s attention and lead them to the main subject of the essay.

Watch this short interactive video below and click on the various icons that appear throughout the video to answer a short question about the different kinds of hooks. Feel free to rewind and retry a question if you get it wrong the first time.

Now it’s time to practice identifying effective hooks and subject introductions. This multiple-choice quiz will test your understanding of what constitutes the best hook and subject introduction.

You can click the blue “i” located beside each option to get a hint before answering. Press “check” to see if you got the answer right and go back to retry your incorrect answers as many times as necessary before moving on to the next part of this workshop.

Finally, it’s time for you to practice writing your own hook and subject. Below you will find two different windows. The first one is to practice writing a hook and the second one a subject sentence. Write your hook with the help of the AI coach by editing your hook at least two times based on the coach’s suggestions. Then type your final hook in the essay form below. Do the same with your subject introduction sentence. Don’t forget to press “submit” after writing each part.
